A couple months ago, when I told him someone had offered pro bono legal counsel to help him seek clemency, Quin’s voice broke. He said, “I’m not used to people caring about me.” What everyone has done collectively has helped show him that the hard won transformation he achieved in his 21 years on death row did not go unnoticed, and that his courage and his vulnerability and his hope—both in life and in death—have not been in vain.

I woke this morning and realized this was the day after. I googled to check and tears immediately began streaming when I read the news. What upsets me most is the way the news outlets choose to add a photo which makes you appear as a monster in the eyes to justify the act.

Positively, I sat at the window facing the sun this morning and chanted in your name and the name of your spiritual transit, liberation and release. Tears continue to fall and even as you have family and friends to comfort from the other side now I express that you are welcome to visit Here during transit period anytime.

Last night I was experiencing strange sounds in the house I am not used to hearing. Almost whimpering or hiccups of weeping and having been chanting for your clemency i can’t help wondering if there was a portal created unto a connection of your passing yesterday.

Rise in Peace Quinton Phillipe Jones.

I listen and dance to this in your Honor and Celebration Today

May your brother and family and friends feel your Peace and Comfort and Calming Presence.

      From the video:

“...and as the old saying goes ‘If you don’t learn from history you tend to repeat it.’ I’ve learned from history. I’ve had 22 years of torment to learn that the mistakes I made — it’s mistakes and it’s not something definitely solid about Who I Am. It’s just a part of a Bigger Me.”

Another very charged subject matter. I personally have never been pro death penalty. I believe, given the right environment and opportunities, that a person can change. I am VERY much for prison reform - that is what is most needed in my opinion. We can not treat criminals like animals and then, when their sentences are up, release them into a world where they have no new skills to navigate the system. There are many success stories of individuals that transformed their lives while in prison and returned to society with a deep passion and commitment to help others like themselves. That could be such a win/win for us all.

There is a short video interview at the original link. It is powerful. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/10/opinion/quintin-jones-texas-death-row-clemency.html

On execution and death: “At the end of the day, I don’t want to be the source of anybody else’s pain and hurt and sadness, so I deal with it by myself.”

          Clemency for Quin

This writing prompt from Quin is when I first read his story. At the bottom is a mailing address where we can send Quin a letter, and also a link to the petition.

His prompt helped me think about the nuance in the word 'strength.' Quin has given hope to strangers he may never meet or hear from.

His writing is certainly worth reading. Quin has such lyrical handwriting.

A death sentence is often invoked as providing closure for the victims’ families, but the family of Jones’s victim is opposed to his execution. They have said that executing Jones will only cause them more suffering and that they recognize his remorse and have forgiven him.

If his execution proceeds, Quinton Jones will be the first person put to death by the State of Texas since July 8, 2020. Texas is one of only two states (with Missouri) to carry out an execution during the global pandemic. The federal government is the only entity that has executed anyone since July. All other scheduled executions nationwide and in Texas have been stayed or otherwise delayed.
