This was devastating. I’m beyond impressed with how this woman developed self-acceptance. I think the prejudice against fat people may be worse than against people of color. There’s more to diversity than Black Lives Matter.

I really Appreciate reads like this one. Walking in other shoes to gain more empathy and compassion and ultimately a Full-Spectrum existentially celebratory spirit for all the physical variety of Us.

Having the mirror held up here really forces me to re-evaluate my own internal judgements, bias, etc.:

When fat sex and dating are discussed, there’s rarely room for simple attraction. But thin people are frequently attracted to other thin people without garnering suspicion of fetishism. They may find themselves drawn to brown-haired people, muscle-bound bodies, or tall partners. They can speak freely of the physical characteristics they like best: chiseled jawlines, long hair, slim legs. In the world of thin people, these are types, a physical attraction so universal that it is neutral.

      My favorite sentence here is:

There is no road map, so we become cartographers, charting some new land for ourselves.

Great comment! Love, “...to gain more empathy and compassion and ultimately a Full Spectrum existentially celebratory spirit for all physical varieties of Us.”

          🙏🏼 Pegeen 🙏🏼

There is a part of me that wonders if this is the same anonymous author of “The Wilds of Our Bodies” article recently posted and read. The account of the formerly fat date feels parallel to what that author expressed. Might dive back into that one. I was weeping by the end of that read.

Side note: Jessica! You consistently scout Incredible Reads. Thank you!

Insightful. I appreciate this authors voice, her honesty and hard won confidence. “Lets imagine more.” Really love that last line - what an empowering invitation.
