I’ve been thinking about this more and I’m not condoning lying, but the way people were hoarding must have factored in to their decision. If I was a healthcare worker, even with great protective gear, I would not want to go to work! They really were/are courageous - blows my mind to really think about it. Especially when their contemporaries were also dying. But I stopped trusting the government long before Covid 19.
People are not dumb, though, a lot of people I know saw right through this/called it as soon as we're advised NOT to wear masks. The magnitude of attempted manipulation stunned many of them and made them cynical about any information coming from official sources. It's obviously not the only factor in why people trust a COVID analysis from random blog on the internet more than CNN/NYT, but IMHO it definitely contributed.
This is infuriating. It's like these people are determined to erode public trust in the institutions they're supposed to be serving.

Agreed! There is little to no trust. Orwells doublespeak.
