To assume that “wealth is the inevitable possession of the few” was to evade the essential issue: “The ethical question of today centres, I am sure, in the distribution rather than in the redistribution of wealth.”
GO DARTMOUTH!
"A hundred-million-dollar gift to Harvard will still be fully deductible, while, in many parts of the country, the property taxes paid to support local public schools will not be."
Really interesting discussion of philanthropies that receive tax-deductible contributions versus the federal government that receives taxes.
That first quote really is excellent, especially in the context of the article. I love how "the ethical question of today"all the way back then is still "the ethical question of today" even today!
But isn't your "GO DARTMOUTH!" sentiment in direct conflict with your second quote which quite directly condemns Harvard? Aren't Dartmouth and Harvard virtually interchangeable in terms of the impact that they have on society?

A week later, I'm still ruminating on this one! For that reason alone, this definitely needs to be filed under "articles that make you smarter"
Wow. So glad I found this. Crazy good.
