I loved the general office atmosphere of the mid 60’s and 70’s; frantic typing, hustle, the aroma of coffee and close, secretive talking. It all seemed so grown up, a world unto itself. I remember my father’s office building and secretary at the police department where he was Captain of Detectives. It had lots of dark wood, marble floors, smoke filled rooms and cork boards filled with papers and sketches. His secretary was a large woman with a gravely voice and foul mouth, which the officers welcomed and encouraged. My dad wore a suit, holster with gun, his long trench coat and hat typical of a detective. My mother was the private secretary for the governor of NJ. The capitol building was limestone, a gold dome, large columns, heavy doors with brass handles, tall windows with armed security. My mother's office was spacious, her heavy wooden desk long and wide, the metal name plate containing her name and title, executive secretary. She wore below the knee fitted dresses and suits with high heels. Her legal pads contained a cryptic type of writing with abbreviations and symbols called short hand that seemed like a secret code. I loved the shapes, the mystery of it. My parents seemed like super heroes that came home, took off their capes, had a drink and never discussed their work.

      'The Office History'

Those who are working from home should know this short history. And those who're working in office must know it's history.

It was an activity before it was a place. It is an important factor in communicating the necessary cues of leadership, collaboration, and communication.
