Two weeks after my first reading, I still can't stop thinking about this piece.
The dictionary definition of insane is "in a state of mind that prevents normal perception, behavior, or social interaction; seriously mentally ill." Celebrity -- the concept itself and the quest to achieve it -- makes us insane. Not surprisingly, super-celebrity makes people super-insane.
Adding race to the mix, and making sense of some of it (of course not all of it all) is something that only Coates can do.
This topic is knotty and huge and it impacts all of us. Hopefully we'll all have the grit to continue digging in deep.
