Why is the movie such a slog then?

Agreed. I went into this as an excited del Toro and Cooper fan and came away disappointed. The Shape Of Water is a masterpiece as are DT’s other films. This experience is lacking for me.

The writer here and I seem to have differing opinions on the strengths and weaknesses of the film However yes… a slog, it is.

The first part was blah to me then the film gets interesting once Cooper starts doing spirit channeling and Cate Blanchett is wonderful (in a very Bette Davis role- I haven’t seen the original was Bette the actress in the original? I need to research.) Bradley Cooper is phenomenal as well if a little goofy at times. He nails the closing moments quite marvelously.

I just walked away with a “meh” reaction overall. This isn’t a film that will stick with me aside from that closing scene.
