      A solid point. I recently read "Up from Slavery" by Booker T Washington. It is interesting how optimistic he was in 1900. At the time the KKK was basically dead and race relations were improving (a low bar from what they were). But institutions changed, people made choices, and the Klan came surging back along with an intensification of Jim Crow laws.

      Progress is never a sure thing. It has to be constantly fought for and guarded.
