Kameny's activism inspired many and this led to real change in the USA's equal rights policies. It may have taken a long, long time, but he did eventually receive a format apology from the US government for his firing from the military, with this apology coming in 2009, 51 years later.

In 2010, Washington DC named a small street after him, calling it Frank Kameny Way is his honour.

Then, he passed away due to heart complications at the age of 86 on October 11, 2011. That was actually on National Coming Out Day.
