Whoa. Wild ride. Mixed feeling about the writing and the structure. Also, I think this could have been shorter - something I don’t usually say. Reading about North Korea blows up everything I think and feel about my own life and my own country. I also find the gruesome details to be enjoyable (?) in a way thats hard to describe and disturbing.

Overall, I’m very glad I read this and eager to keep going. Up next: Suki Kim also wrote about the Underground Railroad in Harper's Magazine. I’m thinking that that piece will be even better than this one.

China (I would think?) can be swayed to change their policy on NK refugees. The US should be able to convince China to keep refugees safe. The Chinese people should demand it. The US should take all NK refugees who wish to come here, and cover the costs. There are only a few thousand anyway. I need to read more about what kind of economic reliance China has on NK. It can’t be that significant, can it?!
