SARS and MERS didn’t cause the same level of devastation that COVID-19 has largely because they aren’t as easily transmitted. This differs significantly from COVID-19, which can be spread by people without symptoms (whether those people go on to develop symptoms eventually, or are entirely asymptomatic throughout their infection, is not yet known).
