      Cars are growing in size here in Norway too, but that's less due to the popularity of SUVs specifically, and more due to the popularity of battery-electric cars, which tend to be larger. Tesla makes large cars, and their Chinese competitors even more so. Have you seen those BYDs on the streets? They're ridiculous!

      And of course, battery-powered cars are a lot heavier, regardless of size, causing more wear and tear to road surfaces.

      I saw a video related to this just yesterday (Nebula, YouTube), the jist of which was that SUVs are worse than station wagons and minivans in basically every way, but especially focused on how much more deadly they are for a number of reasons.

      The video taught me that the reason car manufacturers are pushing SUVs so heavily is because they are exempt from some regulations (because they're classified as light trucks in the USA), possibly the California regulations mentioned in this article.
