It's terrifying that Facebook is allowed to remain in business after it's been proven there's a direct link between Facebook use and violent attacks. Who should take action, and what should that action look like?
I like to think of myself as immune or exempt from the toxic effects of Facebook, which is why I haven't deleted my account. I love the Colombian woman who says, “Social media, it’s an illusion."
"Posts that tap into negative, primal emotions like anger or fear perform best and so proliferate."
This is really sad. I don't think it's inherent to being human. I think it results from humans interacting with the Internet. But I can't explain it.
Those are two very important, complex questions. Thanks for asking!
"Who should take action, and what should that action look like?"
I think not the government and not facebook itself. Which is ironic. Because if you watch or read the news these days, you'd think those were the only two options. Real change will happen when (1) consumers wake the hell up and (2) new, small companies start taking marketshare from Facebook.
What should be done? More people need to use reallyread.it for news and online community, in lieu of Facebook if possible.
Wow. Black mirror.
