Shoutout to @Alexa for finding this gem way back when. I have had this read starred since it hopped onto the Article Standings 2 months ago. Possibly my favorite read I have come across on Readup in quite some time.

"Now" is never just a moment. The Long Now is the recognition that the precise moment you're in grows out of the past and is a seed for the future.

The importance of learning from the past to see how ideas play out historically. And how something that is occurring right now, may seem short-term may eventually transform our way of existence in the long-term.

Can we become inspired by the prospect of contributing to the future?

I think setting outrageous shared goals moving forward into the future is the only way we will be able to accomplish something worthwhile. One of my long-term goals is to read 1,000 books by the year 2032. This goal is such a grind to attend to everyday, and yet I think of all of the novel routes it has led me down, reshaping my thinking.. getting me interested in things I never would have thought it would have, and how empowering it is.. knowing that I always have something to work on. That future me, will be proud of past me.

As soon as we sense the possibility of a more desirable world, we begin behaving differently, as though that world is starting to come into existence, as though, in our minds at least, we're already there. The dream becomes an invisible force which pulls us forward. By this process it starts to come true. The act of imagining something makes it real.

My theory is: that you have to learn the self-discipline for chasing a goal all by yourself at first.. then to progress onwards to sharing your journey with others. Setting collective goals, so that you can understand the perpetual grind that long-term goals can be... and yet also, how driving and inspiring these goals can be.

This was FANTASTIC. I love this idea of the long now vs the short, and framing how we approach the decisions we make using that characterization.

If we want to contribute to some sort of tenable future, we have to reach a frame of mind where it comes to seem unacceptable - gauche, uncivilised - to act in disregard of our descendants.
