I loved this, was rivited. I liked how this Doug Smith interacted with those who disagreed with him. I agree those moments he had with wolves were spiritual. I’ve never encountered a wolf but I did come across two coyotes one of the few times I was in the woods without a dog. The grace with which they moved was nothing like a dog. I’ve never forgotten it.
So glad this got AOTD! A 40 minuter that felt like it was over in 10 because it was so captivating. Doug Smith is a great story teller and it seems like he has a very balanced perspective.
I wonder what is going through a wolf’s mind. (Nothing that resembles the gibberish that often goes through mine, I’m sure!)
If you study wolves, the one thing that comes through is a message about death. They kill other animals, and they have short lives themselves. The prospect for them to die is there on any given day. Yet every wolf you see looks perfectly happy. What I get from that is: Don’t worry about death. Make each day a good one.
Wolves are an odd species. We have persecuted them more than any other wild animal, and yet they will stop to look at you, and occasionally take a step toward you. To me those moments are spiritual. That’s what we’re losing today. People don’t have those experiences anymore. I want to get that connection back. That contact is powerful, and without it we’re untethered.

So glad to hear that this resonated with you, too. Truly a lot to think about and a worthy one to reread.
Re-Read. Yes. Thought the same, as well.
