I was introduced to John Waters in the basement of a friend’s home. We all sat around stoned as Pink Flamingos was projected onto the wall. It felt so rebellious, outrageous, scandalous! What unfolded was shockingly original, hilarious, grotesque and memorable. Divine was iconic. I became a fan and also saw Polyester and Hairspray. I would be very interested in reading some of his books. It’s wonderful to read this perspective of Waters at 73! His parents sound amazing, as it had to be a challenge to raise such an unusual child. Really wonderful that John recognized that.
Laugh out loud funny. Kudos to you John Waters for being so absurdly nuts AND able to tell a good story. I’m off to find some JW books
