Really interesting insight into what fellow players are attempting to do within the Media Industry. I admit the appeal is there, since Substack has established a platform to help some writers with quite the amount of income. The question then becomes how do you create a media ecosystem to help first-time creators more effectively find an audience?

They compared a newsletter to a stock-keeping unit, or SKU, a term of art in inventory management, podcast SK. A speaking fee SKU. A book deal SKU. A consulting SKU. A guest columnist SKU.

Is it just me or does this sound exhausting? However, it is a reflection of the game one plays, when truly trying to make a living off one's creative work.. especially if they are chasing after becoming a "thought leader" in (insert-niche-here).

      Sounds exhausting, yet intriguing.

I love Readup's position in this market. Readers shouldn't always have to think about tipping. It’s distracting. Even with Substack's Reader, you still have to choose which Writers to "buy" on a writer-by-writer basis. On Readup, one subscription gets you all of Readup.

Gotta get Anna Wiener on Readup.

Fascinating. I did not know anything about Substack. “Substack is a natural fit for the influencer, the pundit, the personality, the political contrarian. It’s debatable whether this represents “a better future for news.” I have to think it’s not for the reasons mentioned in this article - “lack of collaboration between writers, editors, copy editors, fact checkers and producers.”
