Super on board with the first half ie. yearning for discourse as opposed to to arguing, but I don't really get how demanding more of your icons via the internet supports that. My interest in discourse over arguing has led me to stay away from using my words on the internet almost completely (until reallyread.it) for these reasons exactly:

"...people treat diets, cross-training regimens, anti-vaxxing, and gun ownership as identity-based lifestyles. Our world has become so polarized around social issues, that politics is our new religion."

People cannot talk about politics rationally or even casually because they will be crucified if they falter from what is expected of them based on their gender, race, age, orientation, interests, social standing, socioeconomic background et al. My understanding of Kanye's Trump support is that he's rejecting the idea of acceptable/assigned politics. He's spoken about how other celebrities are afraid of internet backlash and thus lie about their beliefs and interests. I don't pay too close attention to celebrities or politicians so maybe I'm wrong but I feel like he's asking for things to be more honest, less rehearsed and to allow thinking to be creative and at times wrong. And to be free of the fear that those innocuous things you say or do will either create or betray your identity.

To relate Kanye 'liking' Trump to Bill Cosby being a rapist and OJ Simpson being a murderer is pretty extreme. Even the relation to supporting but also protesting Obama.. protesting policies makes sense and is concrete, protesting a portion of a sentence and a picture with a politician is confusing. I think it's weird that anyone needs flaunt their dismissal of, or justify their support of a celebrity because they said something that sounded bad. I feel like 'calling him on his bullshit' actually does nothing but continues the stale expectations of the left and right on the internet. Maybe the best response would be to recognize that when it comes to public figures we are used to seeing only what has been polished & approved, and when we see something that isn't it should be a time for discourse and not arguing.
