Shane O'Mara advice about walking & how it helps the brain to regain its activity is worth reading if you're fond of WALKING

One of the greatly overlooked superpowers we have is that, when we get up and walk, our senses are sharpened.

You’re walking rhythmically together, and there are all sorts of rhythms happening in the brain as a result of engaging in that kind of activity, and they’re absent when you’re sitting.

Rhythms that would previously be quiet suddenly come to life, and the way our brain interacts with our body changes.”

If you’re feeding your place cells by coming from a single direction, what they know about the environment is that single direction and you want them to have input from all directions, so look around occasionally and your place cells will reset from the whole sensorium around you.

I’ve been walking my whole life—usually with a dog or two. It’s best in nature!

I feel more open to ideas when walking. It's something I've noticed for a long time. I couldn,t take long walks for 6 months because of a foot injury and now that I can walk again I feel much better. I was a gym rat for years. I'm so much happier walking for my main exercise.

I never heard of “place cells.” Fascinating to think that I’m actually “feeding” my cells as I walk, that they are taking in the scenery too! Thankfully, I naturally look all around because I walk in beautiful, hilly neighborhoods that border a vast river. So lots of natural beauty and sounds. Walking is one of my greatest joys - fills me with inspiration and gratitude. I prefer to walk alone to enjoy the deep peace.

I'll definitely walk even more in 2021:

      • calls while walking,
      • walking meetings,
      • walking to the office (6km/1h)
