This pulls together so many things I’ve been thinking about recently — the recent AOTD about The Wing; my own fraught relationship with all brands, including Patagonia; and every single thing Jia Tolentino has ever written. Such a worthy read.

The revolution is coming! After it happens, you’ll be embarrassed to be seen in new clothes. We’ll celebrate the people who do the most with the least. We can just vaguely imagine what this future world will look like, which means that it’s inevitable and coming really really soon.

Gear up! (Or, actually, gear down! ✌️)

I'm so with you on the perplexing nature of Patagonia. I want to love it and rah rah with it, I've read Yvon's books but...at the end of the day it is still a brand and is still, while doing their best, further the consumption world...esp in friends always rocking shiny new Patagonia gear that I am pretty sure has never been truly outdoors/mountaineering.

Kind of with you on all of it. And re: Jia...I love it so much but why does it always feel like just a mix of links to other things and a stream of consciousness pop culture mashup. Halp.

I CAN imagine a world where we're embarrassed to wear new. OMG would love that, I have to stop myself from shaming people for supporting slavery in garment production anytime they brag about a deal at Target or some chain store...uf

I am so glad I read this. It was a fist pumper for sure, what a beautiful way to tie in all the "criticizing capitalists for doing capitalism" pieces I've seen lately. I have admittedly lamented out loud the insanity of love-hating a brand...the brand is so good I can't not love it but...I don't want to.

Years ago, after Rana factory collapsed, I lost my lust for most brands in the apparel world. It's trickling down ever further...
