Absolutely nuts. I wasn't expecting to read this whole thing, but I couldn't stop.

I grew up in a middle-class community in Central Jersey. Not rich, not poor, although I guess everyone says that about where they're from. Anyway, I played varsity tennis in high school and was kinda-sorta good. I was team captain, #2 singles and always made a solid showing at the county tournament. But then I went to Stanford and, comparatively, was so novice that I didn't even play on the dorm intramural team - it was too embarrassing. Absurd how amazing pretty much everyone was at tennis lol. I specifically remember playing with one kid who told me he didn't even make his high school team, so I thought it would be chill, and then I couldn't win a game on him.

It's going to sound like I'm joking or being sarcastic, but I'm really not: Rich kids have it rough.

        1. Update (10/20/2020):

Clarification, because I actually just remembered and now im feeling very proud of it: I actually won the county tournament in my senior year. 😏🥇🎾

But yeah, the point is: rich kids are in a whole different universe

Ha! I did the same thing. I thought I'd read a few paragraphs, get the gist, and drop. I couldn't stop.

I also played Tennis in High School. I wasn't great at all, but had some raw talent. I remember my coach telling me that if I wanted to be really good/scholarship good I would need to practice 10 plus hours a week during the off season and hire a coach etc. I took a hard pass on that, but enjoyed playing through high school.

That is the part that sucks. Some of these sports are really fun and can be life long sports. All the fun is being sucked out of it for these kids.

Yep! Exactly. "Fun" rules. Kinda feels like its being de-prioritized these days. Let's bring it back.
