Just goes to show you, liberal or conservative, republican or democrat, no one is immune to ignoring science due to fear and partisanship.

Great article. Fear is such a powerful force. I don’t have particular fear about the virus but I worry about my distracted kid crossing Third Avenue, about a bus smashing into outdoor dining. There are places I see extreme danger where other people don’t. So if vaxxed people still want to wear a face shield I feel them. And people who are hesitant about vaccines hopefully feel more secure now that so many folks have had it. But I agree with this article that their neuroses in this instance can harm others, especially children who desperately need a return to life. My son’s progressive school just went back full time this week. It was costly to families trying to work and to kids who became anxious and even agoraphobic.

I know of folks who have mild to severe cases of contamination OCD, and the pandemic has exacerbated their OCD and mental health challenges. At first glance, their thoughts and actions may seem baffling and it's much easier to label them as paranoid and neurotic. When the pandemic loomed, many of us started being way more hygienic than we were before, and the line between obsessive cleaning and protection blurred. Public spaces are still an internal battleground for some people. We can't see germs with a naked eye and that makes it harder to accept what are considered lower vs. higher risk activities despite what we now know about COVID.

I also know of folks who are vaccine hesitant due to previous experience with extended hospitalizations and complications with vaccinations that make them deeply worried about getting the COVID vaccine. They feel so much shame about this despite having been vigilant about being very cognizant of their behavior and following COVID protocols throughout the pandemic.

When vaccinated adults refuse to see friends indoors, they’re working through the trauma of the past year, in which the brokenness of America’s medical system was so evident. When they keep their kids out of playgrounds and urge friends to stay distanced at small outdoor picnics, they are continuing the spirit of the past year, when civic duty has been expressed through lonely asceticism. For many people, this kind of behavior is a form of good citizenship. That’s a hard idea to give up.

It is interesting how liberals became so science-averse amid all of this.

        *SOME liberals. 😉

But yeah. I'm seriously concerned about my town - Taos, New Mexico. It's super liberal and I think it's going to take forever for the community to get past fear-based thinking. A lot of folks are getting vaccines and still wearing masks while going for a walk in the park. "Insane" is perhaps an insensitive word, but how else do you describe this kind of behavior? Sanity involves evaluating risk and using logic and evidence to make decisions.
