I’m almost 75 so there are lots of truly possible last times. I’ll buy a car and think, This could be my last car. My dog is 7 and I’ll think, I may have one more dog. It’s not theoretical to me because my mom died of a stroke before my current age. Everything is precious because leaving is no longer a distant possibility. Every tree, flower, blade of grass, piece of art, Chardonnay, text from my grown child, backyard game of baseball with a grandchild is a possible last.
You might find, though, that when you frame it as a potential last time, you pay more attention to it, and you appreciate it for what it is in a way you normally don’t.
What a phenomenal practice! Truly great way to stay present and appreciative no matter what it is. Love it - the last time I type a exclamation point? Not a chance!
I’ve always struggled with the often-repeated refrains “to be present”, “appreciate the now”, “Be here now”, etc, - there’s just something super awkward and forced about it, and often doesn’t generate the appreciation it is suppose to, I end up feeling nothing. This contemplation about the possible last times kind of naturally get you to appreciate the now, what a great practice to incorporate into your daily moments!
A day or two after reading this I viewed The Starling and this song, The Last Time, is so appropriate to this read! Brandi Carlile is a Goddess. Unfortunately, the tune appears to be rather elusive online atm.

So sad and true ❤️
Beautiful and true. Maybe, beautiful because true?
