In theory, rubber bullets are supposed to cause less harm than a “regular” bullet. But, in reality, they can do serious damage.

My Twitter feed is filled with images of people injured by these bullets. They're all so horrible. And more terrible is the fact that they are shot at point-blank range most of the time. Wickedness.

I spent four years in the Marine Corps. We were trained on 'less-lethal' tactics like using rubber bullets, take down techniques, blood chokes, etc. One point our instructors always stressed was that less-lethal is still lethal. So don't engage in these activities unless you absolutely have to because odds are still pretty high that someone is going to get seriously hurt or die.

That is what is boggling my mind about this whole situation. The officer who killed Mr. Floyd had to have known that kneeling on the neck is either going to cut off air or blood, both are lethal. When I was in the military I was more and more concerned by the number of tactics I learned there being used by civilian peace keeping forces ie cops. From the battle-rattle (bullet proof vests, web gear, the big belt full of weapons, etc), to the way the stood back at cars out of view point, they were treating us like a hostile populace. And they have more and more access to big fire power and upgraded vehicles.

I used to think people who didn't want cops to carry guns were nuts, now I think I agree.
