“Sugar spikes your blood sugar and insulin levels, as well as disrupting your neurotransmitters in the brain, which increases fat storage. Eating more protein, fiber, fruit, and vegetables increases your metabolism, and your body burns it off more efficiently. It really isn’t just about the calories but about the quality of foods you eat and the way your body processes them.”

If you really wanna get mad, do a little research on the content of feeding tube “nutrition” in hospitals. Someone I know who works in the ICU once sent a picture of the ingredients label (in order): Water, corn maltodextrin, high oleic safflower oil, milk protein concentrate, isomaltulose, sugar, canola oil (followed by a bunch of chemicals).

This is what hospitals are feeding directly into the guts of the sickest people on their last limbs. A sugar concoction.

Yes, I know what you are saying! When I was in college and studying to be a nutritionist, I worked in Dietary. What a nightmare!!! The diets that were prescribed were devoid of any nutrients whatsoever! I could not believe all the sweets that were on the desks of the dietitians and at the nurses stations! Our current medical system is completely outdated. Nutrition should be required and not just one course. It needs to be the backbone of medical school. The framework from which the entire system is built. It is now a recognized fact that all the leading causes of disease - diabetes (type 2), heart disease, high blood pressure, even some forms of cancer, are preventable. But it’s not all just about food. Health is complex, multifaceted and involves treating the entire person - body, mind spirit. Our current system does not do that.

A RU 10 rating...... I’m basing that 10 rating on the hope that I might be able to do the two-week sugar free experiment… And if it works out as advertised… Oh boy

For my 40th birthday, over 25 years ago, I was given a gift certificate for Barnes and Noble - a favorite place of mine. I would always say a little prayer before entering the store - please lead me to the book I need to read. At the time, I thought I was eating a really healthy diet, after all that was my career path as a health and fitness trainer. Back then it was all about “whole grains, complex carbohydrates.” I was eating this way, exercising 6 days a week and also doing some form of meditative practice. However, I felt tired, bloated and defeated in my efforts at being healthy. I was “led” to the health section of the book store. I randomly pulled “the” book from the self containing an endless selection of diet and exercise programs. I read the back of it and it said something to the affect, do you think you are doing everything right for your health but still feel tired, bloated and constantly hungry? OMG, that was me! I immediately purchased the book, Lifestyle Of the Fit and Famous by Dr. Kaplan. It changed my life forever. Within the pages was a 4 week program to eliminate sugar completely from your diet. The first week was absolutely brutal - basically only lean protein and greens. No condiments, no fruit, no root vegetables. Going to through that withdrawal was INSANE! I had 2 young kids at the time and I was making everyone’s meals. It was one of the most difficult things I have ever done - ever. But like the author of this article, after my withdrawal period, the clarity, energy and weight loss was miraculous. I’m now 65 and still adhere to this diet but in a much more flexible way. I seriously do not crave sweets. I don’t even crave fruit. One of my favorite “desserts” are the tiny sweet multicolored peppers or a Granny Smith apple (I like crunch). I kid you not. It is the most liberating feeling not to be “controlled” by sugar. I highly recommend it. The book is still in print.

A really important and powerful article. Just the fact that refined sugar makes us fat and stupid should inspire change.

Interesting example. Sugar is powerful, I’m certainly addicted. I attempt to use natural sugars such as maple syrup, but refined sugar is everywhere.

In the context of the current diabetes epidemic, education about this topic is essential. Avoidance is nearly impossible for those with smaller food budgets, this is certainly impacting those below the poverty line very significantly.

I am a nurse practitioner and a few years ago started a job helping patients control or avoid diabetes. I realized how much sugar was in our prepared foods and drinks. I thought my diet was healthy-but when I looked closely at sugar intake by reading nutrition labels for example fruit yogurt, I was eating a lot of sugar. I now try to eat no refined sugar and over the years my waist reappeared and I feel great. My friend stopped her daily snacking a Kit Kat here a hard candy there and just told me the other day she feels as smart as when she was young. I believe now that cutting out sugar is the best thing we can do for our mental emotional and physical health. It’s hard at first and then the cravings go away completely.

That is great! I feel inspired to cut the sugar.
