      I loved this. Such a great breakdown and framing of the challenging journey of any creative pursuit.

      But then, after a few minutes of dumbfounded staring — you don’t have a breakthrough, exactly, but you glimpse a possibility.

      Eureka moments are fun but they're few and far between. Summoning the energy to pursue those slight (sometimes ever so) glimpses of possibility is the best hope for a productive or at least non-zero day.

        One year later, finally read this! Awesome!! Ben Dolnick is a true writer’s writer. I loved this too.

        In fiction writing you are of course both the maker and the solver, but the sense of discovery — the feeling that whole sublayers of structure and theme have been created by a stranger with your pleasure in mind — is no less acute.
