      This was also pretty obvious to me. But then again i also use tons of free services (Gmail! Facebook!) that are “free” under the awareness that they’re making more off of me than what they could outright charge.

      It's always been obvious to me that these are sold cheaply to sell services, but I never thought about it as acquiring loyalty.

      As far as privacy goes, if you are at all concerned with privacy, stay away! I'm not too concerned about privacy, so we have several Echo Dots and one Google Home Mini.

      We got the Google device for free, as mentioned in the article. Our electric company sold us a smart thermostat at a deep discount and threw the Home Mini with it. As the article says, you might just wind up with one of these devices by accident.

      Uf, I have been sent so many free offers for these things. Not for me. If something is free you gotta know they are getting something very valuable out of it...
