Impressive. And a step in the right direction. The problem of the mentally ill is huge. To think the police are not going to get involved is unrealistic, since homelessness has grown to epic proportions. Perhaps have a much more rigorous educational requirement to even become a police officer. And have the education to include how to handle the mentally ill. I don’t think the police should have to deal with this on their own because this problem seems much too vast for one organization to handle.

Agreed. We once had a national system for helping the mentally ill, it involved a lot of institutionalization. Following the publication of (and movie) "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" there was a massive outcry to dismantle that system. The system needed reform, but getting rid of it completely dumped a lot of mentally ill folks into the homeless population.

And essentially, all we were really doing was revictimizing the people that lived within a community and (inaudible) opportunities for other criminals to come in and (inaudible) behind that which we were removing. We were doing everything from a proactive perspective and doing it completely unilateral from the community in and of itself. We didn't have their permission. We didn't have their consent. So we didn't have legitimacy.

And not knowing it. Spot on.
