A bit long winded and not particularly rousing, but I definitely agree with Zuckerberg's position on free speech and the empowering nature of the internet. I don't like Facebook but they're only a small part of it so I just don't use it. I wanted to read this before reading all the articles attacking it. The New Yorker one by Masha Gessen left me wondering whether the author had even listened to or read the speech. I feel like too many people in the media industry just love to hate Facebook and will lash out any time Zuckerberg says anything publicly.

Interesting. I love reading primary sources, straight from the mouths and minds of public figures. It’s the fastest path to truth and legitimate, home-grown thoughts and opinions. “Wisdom” might be the word. :)

I’d like for this to become AOTD because I’d love to know what others think. My knee-jerk negative reaction to all things Facebook has less to do with how it handles politics/news/speech and more to do with the fundamental mechanics and incentives intrinsic to the platform. It’s a sad and boring (but addicting) look at a tiny fraction of a tiny fraction of a tiny fraction of the people you know, but it’s made to feel like you’re “sharing with the world.” The whole thing is painfully shallow and soulless (Mark’s advertising company) so of course any conversation about big picture values and/or impact on society is missing the point. Mark’s singular value is making money. That’s why this conversation plays into Mark’s hand. He wants people arguing about the wild stuff (fake news, terrorism) because it distracts from the sadder, weirder fact: hundreds of millions of people scrolling through their feed for hours on end. It’s a behavior that rots the brain in a confirmed, quantifiable way. Legit depressing.
