I thought that this was an interesting peek behind the curtains of an industry that is increasingly pervasive in our society. I could have skipped the dramatizations but, overall I found the show to be very interesting and relevant.

After watching the show I found myself hyper aware of my own use of technology...what ads I was seeing online, promoted videos, etc. I think users having a level of awareness that this is happening to them is part of the solution on a personal level.

I had a friend post online about her concern over security concerns related to having a Covid-19 contact tracing app on her phone (she was concerned about being tracked by the government). My advice to her was if she truly has a concern about being tracked (and was not just reposting some politically driven propaganda) then she should remove herself from all social media and online activity. If you are online at all you are a part of the game.

I don’t think social media and data driven marketing are going anywhere. So, I think we have to protect ourselves on a personal level by raising our level of awareness to how we are marketed to and manipulated online as well as protecting each other by electing officials who will regulate the industry.

tl;dr: Very interesting show, poignant and relevant for our time. Definitely worth a watch!

Cannot recommend enough watching the "Social Dilemma". Whether you are familiar with these topics or not, it is incredibly important to understand the present state our information environments are in.

Nevertheless, there are solutions and we need to work together to come up with them. Being a Readup user is a great start, but this is just the very beginning of what is looking like to be an entirely new era of social media!
