China is hardly exceptional when you think about the Snowden revelations about the NSA and digital surveillance in the U.S. Democracy is good when it works, but at some point one has to admit that the U.S. is getting dangerously close to certain authoritarian tactics (mass surveillance) while maintaining the facade of democracy vs. countries like China....
It's a fair point, but the difference in my mind is the level of collusion involved. US companies like Apple, Facebook, and Google aren't subsidiaries of the NSA, FBI, or Federal Government.
This is a very good point. I felt that the author's comparison of China to the US and rest of the world was a bit naïve given what we learned from Snowden.
Keeping that in mind though I'm also reminded of Apple's high profile legal battle with the FBI in the aftermath of the San Bernardino terrorist attack. Are there any similar examples of huge Chinese tech companies refusing to comply with Chinese federal law enforcement?
