There are some very strange things that are happening in this world. While some contries struggle with huger, poverty corruption etc others have problems with such struggles. I dont mean to be offensive in any way, but I read "educated" a midly distrubing (for me) memior from a girl in a morman family and then this article, and, it is all VERY disturbing. But it made me wonder: are these things reported in the news? How come people don't make a huge deal out of this? or do they and I just don't know about it? For example, when I tell people that I am vegetarian they'll almost always respond going like "oh yeah in your country cows are considered holy" (to me this sounds condescending, maybe they dont mean it that way) but if such things are big news and everyone knows about it, and such beliefs are looked down upon, how come these issues (those talked about in the article) are not known to everyone? How come such issues are not made as big of a deal? Or are they? and I just dont know it? Also! I do not mean to offend anyone or any belief, I am just genuinely wondering this!

I do not envy people raising daughters in this world.

Or boys because they are being sexually abused as well. When it happens with a male perpetrator, it can confuse a boy about his sexual identity. This article shows such bravery with these Amish girls and what good can happen with the solidarity of women.

There are a lot of Amish in my area. I knew, aas do many around here, that Amish life is not what the media presents, but I had no idea that this was happening.

      Excruciating, but important to read.

Reminds me that I never got around to "Women Talking" by Miriam Toews, a book I've been wanting to read for a while.

Sometimes I find myself fascinated by these small, orthodox communities. But then I read stuff like this and it just sounds like 100% nightmare. It's really hard to see any light, anywhere.

A MUST read! This is gut wrenching, horrifying! I am blown away. This can not remain a secret. I appreciate Readup for its incredible articles that continue to awaken me. I truly pray this is the beginning of the takedown of the Amish patriarchy. Brutal!
