Be Mindful of who you are Granting Permission to Influence you! Ultimately, you Know yourself better than anyone and some therapy/therapists are more about themselves and/or MONEY than you.

There is a Major Trend post-pandemic towards pushing therapy/therapists which is a good thing for people in need. However, there is a dark, dangerous side to this that is disturbing…because if the goal of therapy or a therapist is to whitewash (in some cases, literally, like the blurb below that stood out to me out of the 30 here) what is wild, weird and wonderful about you via meds or categorizing conditions or normalizing you then those are Warning Red Flags, imho.

This experience disturbed me a lot out of all of them:

      1. "First-generation Indian-American here — any time I would talk to my (former) white therapist about family issues, I’d waste half of my time trying to explain the cultural significance of things in order for her to understand why they were issues to begin with. She’d always roll her eyes and shrug my problems off as irrelevant. The straw that broke the camel’s back was when she said, 'Ugh, these third-world eastern countries are too backwards for you to bother giving any importance to.' I’m proud of my Indian heritage, and I left that session knowing I’d never go back — cultural sensitivity is super important, and I have yet to find a therapist who can help me without needing me to teach them about my culture."

In closing I leave you with this Powerful Scene from The Imitation Game:

I’ve been a therapist for almost 40 years and every account here is horrifying to me. It’s especially damaging to children who don’t have enough experience to sometimes question what might look like an authority figure to them. But obviously adults can be incredibly vulnerable too. It’s important to try to get recommendations from people you trust. And NEVER stay with anyone who feels toxic to you. A therapist should never force religion on a client. This article disturbs me to my core.
