Heady. Showing how conservatives and progressives today are -- potentially unwittingly -- undermining liberalism. Grab a cup of tea... this is a long dense read.

Wish I could give this one an '11'.

This is deep, dense reading but very important in understanding where we came from, where we are and where we might go.

<>This instinct for bonding and the thinness of shared moral life in liberal societies has shifted global politics on both the right and the left toward a politics of identity and away from the liberal world order of the late 20th century. Liberal values like tolerance and individual freedom are prized most intensely when they are denied: People who live in brutal dictatorships want the simple freedom to speak, associate, and worship as they choose. But over time life in a liberal society comes to be taken for granted and its sense of shared community seems thin. Thus in the United States, arguments between right and left increasingly revolve around identity, and particularly racial identity issues, rather than around economic ideology and questions about the appropriate role of the state in the economy.

Well worth the read. The less liberal our culture becomes the more intense the political fights will be.

Wow, I really had to focus and pay attention every second of this article. Excellent explication of where we are today with liberalism and how we got here! The author points out that liberalism is slower and requires compromise—which seems to be a dirty word in our politics today. Great read!!

Really excellent article! Everyone should read this one, lest we risk taking liberalism for granted.

That is definitely something that stood out in the article. When everyone took shared morals for granted we could move on to individual pursuits. But some of those individual pursuits have underlined important morals around group cohesion and welfare, belonging, and committing to causes bigger than ourselves ie thinking generationally. My fear is that we are taking liberalism for granted and the actions we are collectively making will undermine the very things we want to accomplish.
