An interesting question that this author could look at next is, “What would make this trend reverse?” Is there anything that would encourage more people to marry (whether that’s good or bad)?
Interesting. It’s about love. It seems to me it’s also about commitment which can be life giving. Commitment is so important but it can go wrong if it’s not valued, attended to, grown with, kept alive. We are forgetting how to do that or maybe we are still learning. Until we learn more it’s easy to look at commitment as limiting instead of deepening and expanding.
I appreciate this comment. I think the danger of making marriage about love is that love changes and doesn't always last. I like the idea of commitment, that still serves children and families long after love may have run it's course. So if a wife and wife are in love and adopt a child or a man and a woman fall in love and have a kid, I want to ensure the commitment last beyond the love, should the love die.
It’s about the love,’ she said. ‘It’s not about class. It’s not about race. It’s not about any of that kind of stuff. It’s just about love and two people doing what you should be able to do, and that’s love each other.’
Is marriage about love? This is a great question to answer. Is marriage an act of self-fulfillment or an institution to serve society and children? Both?

My take: Yes to all three. But also not a requirement for any of them.
Fascinating.
