You know, I came to this country from South Korea almost forty years ago. I wasn't yet technically a teenager, as I was a few months shy of turning ten. In all that time, one thought has never occurred to me until, well, 2016 (can you guess the timing?): that USA may not be my final destination. That like my parents before me, I may be going somewhere else to live out the rest of my days.

      It's a very sad thought. I hope I'm wrong.

For nonwhites, these last four years have been more than just unpleasant -- they've been unsafe.

I am so, so sorry to hear that! I visited South Korea a few years ago and was overwhelmed by the hospitality we were shown. I will never forget it. I hope the good people in this country step up and try to practice kindness and respect here. I believe we must if we want to save ourselves and this country.

Thank you, Plum. Of course, people like you would be the reason why I wouldn't leave America. Honestly, I don't even know where I would go. I suppose the motherland could be one such destination, but to be honest, it's not like they're not racist over there, either (not to mention worse treatment of women, blind respect for the elderly, etc.).

There's no perfect place, obviously. But there's no doubt that America has become a whole lot less perfect these last few years. :( I'll certainly do everything in my power to make this country a better place to live for anyone and everyone, but it surely feels like an uphill battle.

Oh my God. I am embarrassed to be an American if this is how Americans treat other people in times of stress. There is no excuse for this blatant hatred. When will it stop? Unfortunately the current administration encourages racial hatred and cruelty. So so sad. When I encounter an Asian person or any person who looks different than I do I promise to myself that I will smile and “be the love”.

What a disgrace! It’s shameful that people are so ignorant!

So terrible. Sometimes there is so much shame in being white for me. I have to remember these ugly hateful bigots (our horrible leader included) are in a class all their own. They are a minority and serve as a warning to us all about humanity’s flaws. They will not have the final word. History will look back on them with disgust. In Boston a few weekends before everything closed Chinatown was full of customers supporting the community. I have to think most of us will look in the mirror and want to escape the hell that hate and fear create and go for a place more suited to our better angels.
