      Apparently when astronauts view the Earth from outer space they experience a cognitive shift in awareness. It's called the overview effect - the experience of seeing firsthand the reality of the Earth in space, a tiny, fragile ball of life hanging in the void.

      I think that that's kind of like what Toni Morrison's novels do - inject immediate, transcendental awareness about the human condition. Change you forever. (Gabriel Garcia Marquez is another writer that seemed to have this power. Maybe David Foster Wallace.)
