A year behind you Bill but WOW this piece is a worthy long read.
So much to think about, especially now when people are clamoring for ways to prioritize social services over policing.
It's a big thing to consider, esp when we grow up surrounded by media that frames that "bad guys get put away" message so we can rest and have one less thing to concern ourselves about. What a big big idea, and a big mission for Gilmore.
In 1902, the famous trial lawyer Clarence Darrow told men held in Chicago’s Cook County Jail: “There should be no jails. They do not accomplish what they pretend to accomplish.”
A day later, I still can’t stop thinking about this one. In particular, I’ve been thinking about the word “work” and the way that Gilmore uses it. So clear, so strong.
I think I've always believed in a world without prisons, so I'm glad to have familiarized myself with the term "prison abolition." This article is fact- and insight-packed, so much so that it's hard not to feel sold. The conversation seems to have a lot in common with UBI - it requires a big, radical imagination and a willingness to "get at the root" as Angela Davis said, but once you can see the way a big idea can become a brighter future, you can't unsee it. After reading this article, the end of incarceration seems almost inevitable to me, the only path forward for humanity. It's what our kids' kids will be talking about when they talk about justice.
